Freelancer and E-Trader Permit

Abstract geometric line drawing: a single tall block standing on a horizon line, hollow and open at top and bottom, crossed at its middle by one gold band carrying two teal segments, gold hairlines on dark navy.

A freelance permit lets you sell your own professional services in the UAE in your own name, invoice clients directly, and sponsor your own residence rather than depending on an employer. It is the lightest legal structure the country offers and it is the right one for consultants, designers, developers, marketers, trainers, photographers and media professionals working alone. The e-trader route is its close relative for individuals selling goods online from home. Both are permits attached to a person rather than licenses attached to a company, which is why they are cheaper and also why they cap what you can do: no staff visas, and a defined professional scope. We tell you where that ceiling is before you buy, and we say plainly when your plan has already outgrown it and a company is the better structure.

Key Features

  • Professional activity selected from the issuing authority's freelance list, which is narrower than a company activity list and is the first thing to check
  • Permit issued, then the establishment card and your own residence visa file through medical, Emirates ID and stamping
  • Bank account introduction so invoices are paid into an account in the permit's name rather than a personal one
  • A plain answer on the ceiling: what a permit does not allow, including staff visas and activities outside the professional scope you registered
  • You supply your passport, your qualification or portfolio evidence where the activity calls for it, a no objection certificate if you are currently on another sponsor's visa, and the services you intend to sell

Benefits for Your Business

  • Invoice UAE clients legally in your own name, which is what corporate clients ask for before they onboard you as a supplier.
  • Your own residence visa and Emirates ID, so your status does not end when a contract does.
  • The lightest and lowest cost legal structure available, with the ceiling stated up front rather than discovered later.
  • A clean upgrade path into a company license when the work outgrows the permit, without starting the file again.

General information, not legal advice. The activities open to a freelance permit, the qualification evidence required and all official fees are set by the issuing authority and change from time to time. Whether you can hold a permit while on another sponsor's visa depends on your current status and your sponsor. We confirm your position with the authority before you commit.
