What a general trading license allows
A general trading license lets one company trade in many unrelated product categories under a single license, for example electronics, textiles, foodstuffs and machinery together. It suits importers, exporters and distributors who do not want to be tied to one product line.
Some goods still need an extra approval from the relevant authority, such as food, cosmetics, medical products and chemicals. We check your products before you apply.
General trading vs specialised trading license
| General trading | Specialised trading | |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Many unrelated categories | One category or related group |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Importers and distributors with a mixed range | A focused business, such as electronics only |
General trading license cost in Dubai
| Route | Typical first year |
|---|---|
| Dubai mainland (DET) | About AED 15,000 to 30,000 with an office and one visa, more with a bigger office or warehouse |
| Free zone | Many zones offer general trading; compare them in our cheapest free zone guide |
A mainland license lets you sell to any customer in the UAE. A free zone suits trading mainly abroad or through the zone. See mainland company setup for the full comparison.
Import and export with a trading license
To move goods through UAE customs, your company also needs to register for a customs code with the customs authority of the emirate. VAT registration follows once your taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 a year (see our VAT registration guide).
How to get a general trading license
- Choose mainland or free zone based on where your customers are.
- Confirm your products and any extra approvals.
- Reserve the trade name and get initial approval.
- Office or warehouse lease (Ejari on the mainland).
- License issued, then the customs code, visas and bank account.
