Trademark Registration

A registered mark is the only version of your brand the law will defend. Filed with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism under Federal Decree-Law 36 of 2021.

A trade licence gives you the right to trade under a name. It does not give you the right to stop anyone else using it. That is what a registered trademark does, and in the UAE it is governed by Federal Decree-Law 36 of 2021 and filed with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism. The application is not the hard part. Classification is. A mark is registered against specific classes of goods and services, and a mark registered in the wrong class protects nothing you actually sell. We search first, classify against what you trade rather than what you plan to trade one day, and file against the classes that matter. The ministry publishes its own fee schedule, so you know the official cost before you start.

Without objections, most marks are registered in a few months. Registration lasts 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed for further 10-year periods.

Trademark registration in Dubai

There is no separate Dubai trademark. A mark registered with the Ministry of Economy and Tourism is protected across all seven emirates, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and in the free zones. Your trade licence and your trademark are different things: the licence lets you trade under a name, and only the trademark lets you stop others using it.

A registered mark can be a word, a logo, a slogan, or a combination. For a new company, register the mark once the brand is settled, ideally alongside the trade licence.
